At our meeting of 28/01/21 Tewkesbury CLP passed an emergency motion in support of striking British Gas Workers.
It reads:
This CLP condemns Centrica for their fire and rehire attack on British gas workers.
We resolve to support the GMB union in their strike action against fire and rehire and call on the company to drop their ultimatum and instead enter into meaningful negotiations with the GMB union.
To support the GMB this CLP resolves to encourage all members to:
– Support the GMB hardship fund
– Join the strikers support group on Facebook
– And make a donation to the GMB strike fund (where able to do so)
UK companies are using the cover of Covid-19 to embark upon a concerted attack on employee pay and benefits. A poll published by the TUC today reveals that nearly one in 10 (9%) workers have been told to re-apply for their jobs on worse terms and conditions since the first lockdown in March.
‘Fire and Rehire’ strategies are being put into operation by some the UK’s biggest employers to reduce workers’ pay, overtime and holiday benefits. Thousands of British workers are facing a ‘levelling down’ in pay and working conditions, in stark contrast to the Government’s stated promises.
British Gas workers are being given an ultimatum to either accept reduced pay and benefits or face the sack. Read more about the strike issues here.
